How to Get Rid of Japanese Beetles

Japanese Beetles can have a devastating effect on a garden. They especially like to eat roses, apples, peaches, plums and berries, but in a pinch they’ll eat anything in a garden.

In this article, the Herb Gardener explains why Japanese Beetles are proliferating, how Japanese Beetles scout for feeding grounds, and how to get rid of them. He also includes a nice list of plants that Japanese Beetles hate. For example, mint, chives, leeks, tansy, and white chrysanthemums cause Japanese Beetles to detour around your garden.

How to Make a Strawberry Pallet Planter (Includes a Video!)

Tanya wrote a blog post last year about how to make a strawberry planter out of a wooden pallet. I featured the article because I loved both the repurposing of the wood and the wonderfully clean look of the final planter.

Well now Tanya has added a terrific DIY video that shows each step of building a strawberry planter with pallet wood. It takes approximately 2 hours to build. She also explains which type of pallets and tools to use. It’s a really helpful video.

Doña first explains how she has included her daughter in the gardening process in her home. When her daughter was 2, she showed her how to plant carrot seeds, nurture them, harvest them and then decide how to eat them.

Gardening with your kids is time well-spent. They learn how to plan and work in the garden. It helps them to understand where a part of the food they eat comes from. They work in the dirt which most kids love. And it gives you the opportunity as a parent to share quality time with your kids.

Doña shares 5 different vegetables that are fun and easy for kids to grow. Click on the 5 Easy Vegetables to Plant With Your Kids below to read the entire article.

How to Grow a Low-Maintenance Perennial Garden on a Budget!

creeklinehouse.com

In this article, Courtenay explains how she and her husband began the process of growing a low-maintenance perennial garden on a budget. She always provides good information and has a great sense of humor 🙂

Among other things, she explores:

  • Where and when to buy cheap plants
  • Which plants should you get?
  • Aside from buying plants, where else can you get perennials for your garden?

She also has some thoughts on landscaping fabric, which is used to kill weeds. I’ve always thought landscaping fabric was more trouble than it was worth. Planting new flowers or veggies after the fact is more cumbersome. You have to slit through the fabric to the dirt below. I’ve also heard that it seems to discourage earthworms (not good). Landscape fabric is also made from petroleum products. All in all I’d rather have dirt to dig in and use traditional methods to control weeds.

How to Make A Raised Bed Garden in a Small Garden Space

raisedurbangardens.com

Melanie has a friend who has extremely limited garden space, but wanted to grow tomatoes. So Melanie built her raised bed garden boxes. There are so many advantages to this type of gardening. You control the quality of the soil and keep many garden pests at bay. The height of the beds is perfect – no bending or kneeling.

I thought this was a great inspiration piece. If you’d like to buy the plans for these raised garden boxes, Melanie has a “Buy the Plans” button top right.
